I’m sure everyone has seen all the bolt together stands on the market these days, you can even get them in your local supermarket!
Their claim is you can disassemble it for transport / storage, so what’s the problem with that? In theory, nothing, in practice, who pulls their stand apart once it’s together? My guess is no one!
The real reason these stands are made to come apart is so they can be flat packed & shipped cheaply (from wherever they come from) that’s it, cheap freight!
So, again, what’s the problem?
Well, look at it this way, anytime you drill a hole through a structural section like a bike stand frame you weaken it. Also the tube they use has a very thin wall (sometimes less than 1.5mm, more on this another day) so when you put a bolt through the two tubes all the load is not only working on bending that bolt but working on wearing that thin walled hole into a slot.
The result of this is a stand that, no matter how tightly you do up the bolts, will always flop side to side. Not exactly confidence inspiring when you have your very expensive pride and joy balanced up there!
Here at Sharp Racing all our stands have a one piece frame, no holes, no bolts and no chance (ever!) of your bike ending up on the floor! Yes, they are a bastard to ship and most couriers rudely call them ‘Ugly Freight’ but that’s my problem, not yours, I’m not going to compromise the strength and stability of my stand for them,
Sometimes the simple things are the best!
